I was just curious and looked at the sample policy for CFIs at the AOPA Insurance Agency and there is a clause that "the non-owned aircraft will not be used for commercial purposes.

If I read that correctly, if you ever instruct in a rental, you wouldn't be covered would you?

I really don't understand the insurance stuff. I'm almost convinced it's all a rip off.

You'll need to check with a lawyer on this, but I believe that this clause is only there to prevent the CFI from borrowing/renting a plane and then hiring out for commercial purposes, e.g., giving sightseeing rides or instruction to others. It would not deny coverage for a CFI giving instruction to someone in that person's own plane, or to an FBO's clients in the FBO's plane.
