Some aquaintence's aging father died, then not to long afterwards his old house partially burned, destroying all known life and house insurance records. Where to search?

His checking account. Most likely paid for the policy(s) by check. Find the canceled check (or bank record) and then contact whoever cashed it.

I would also visit the lawyer who wrote his will, if any.

It was a mature, whole-life policy requiring no recent payments and there was no will.

If you can find friends and acquaintences, run the clock back a few years and find out if there were any favored insurance agents that they used to talk to/be friends with/do business with. If that doesn't work, start a letter campaign to all the major carriers.

He was quite reclusive so no joy with word of mouth.
Apparently with the newer privacy laws, one can't just contact an insurance company and get info on policies a certain person might have in force.
