Hi All,

Long story short, last night I think I may have uninstalled a component that my computer needs to work properly. Applications such as Chrome, IE, paint, etc., are failing to start, and are giving me this error
This application failed to start because C:\windows\system32/wxvault.dll was not found. Reinstalling this application may fix this problem

What can I do to fix this?

Thanks,

Brent

...buy a Mac? :D

Brent: Maybe this will help??? YMMV

Whenever in doubt, I usually search for the error message in Google to see what others might be suggesting to try, and if it's similar to what I did to mess up the system.

Edit: Doh Steamee beat me to it...

Brent, you have a Dell laptop? ;)

That file comes from a piece of software called Embassy Trust Suite from Wave Systems. It's particularly nasty in that, to "hook itself" into the environment, it actually patches the system's kernel32.dll file to redirect calls through itself--that's why you're having failures in all those "other apps" once Trust Suite got uninstalled.

See here for more details: http://mikedimmick.blogspot.com/2007/12/calling-out-embassy-trust-suite.html

If you can get a new kernel32.dll file from another machine at the same patch level as you're at, that would likely fix it, too. [Caveat emptor: kernel32 is an important system file--you can't modify it while the system is running.... Don't try this if you don't know how to make backups of the file first, etc.]

A simpler method might just be to download and reinstall Trust Suite:

http://support.dell.com/support/dow...1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=50&fileid=239474 [NOTE: Click the Compatibility link on this page and make sure it's for your system type before you install it...]

It may have become infected and removed by a virus scanner. I can send you a clean one, or you can try the solution above. There also may be a copy in System Restore or in the DLL cache.

Sorry guys for the long delay here...I'll work through these responses and report back with what happens, thanks!
