Good luck!

thanks Chuck, done deal, it works great now..

I got a pop-up that was obviously colored to look like Firefox, saying, "Do you want to block spam email?"

Dese dudes are EEEVIL.

And I have a well known spammer BASED IN UTAH who is sending me 34 spams a day. What happened to the CAN-SPAM act? He acts like he's complying but I bet the source email address isn't valid.

If you're getting the "Google or Yahoo?" "Target or Walmart?" "surveys" this is the guy.

I may be flying west for a personal mission.

Actually he's in Nevada. He's using a Utah address in the messages.

Did you update Spybot before running it? And did you do a "Search for Spyware" or just install it?

I down loaded "Spybot search and destroy", launched it, and looked for updates and instaled them,

I unpluged the DSL patch cord from the laptop, and ran the search for problems, It found the the bad files and removed them. as did the MS upgrade, and the MS anti spyware add on.

but they reload as soon as I plug in the DSL line..

PC Tools "Guardian" won't stop them..

Reboot the computer. As the computer restarts, BEFORE you see the Windows screen, hit the F8 key. I usually just keep tapping it after the computer restarts.

On the menu that pops up, select Safe Mode. Do not use Safe Mode with Networking. Just Safe Mode.

Once started, you'll see a warning message that you're now in Safe Mode. Click OK. NOW run Spybot and clean any problems. Don't worry about the updates since you already did them.

Restart the computer and see if it fixed the issue. If not, there may be something else going on.

If you are still having problems after that. It's going to get tricky.

I've had some where I spent at least two eight hour shifts trying to figure out where it was hiding at. One of the oddest ones actually set itself up as a plugin of the google toolbar. So you'd launch IE. Last thing you'd expect to be evil would be the google toolbar. Once hte toolbar would launch, It's plugin would too. and bam the spyware was back.

One simple thing you oculd try, would be go into safemode like he suggested. Run the scans, remove everything. I beleive you can make a new user in safe mode. Make a new user, and then reboot and login as that user. It may be hiding somewhere in the profile of your current XP user.

If you are still having issues really you need to pinpoint what it is exactly. Search on google for hijackthis.exe that will help show quite a bit of the things that are starting up. You'll have to research any you do not recognize. The more you deal with this stuff the quicker you will get.

if I did that everytime my computer locks up the helpless desk at CSC would have me reinstall windows.
LOL
I ONLY meant the advice of Spybot S&D. ;)

Sounds like a minor registry edit may be in order for those spyware programs. Many times there's a registry call for the spyware in 3 places...HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_USERS. These keys are in the SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/RUN sections. These calls usually go to an innocent looking little file who's sole purpose is to confirm that the spyware is installed and running and if it's not, reinstall and run it. Regedit in safe mode is the only way to clean them and it's not a fast process since it requires a reboot after clearing each section....one...by...one...ugh!!!
