Hey everyone. My little girl is getting older (almost 2) and the ear muffs I bought for her when she was a baby won't work anymore.

I was thinking it'd be good to pick up some muffs that would attenuate the sound, but that could also be plugged into an iPad, etc to watch videos as she gets a little older. I don't think I need anything that plugs into the aircraft yet, but that may be useful in another year.

Any suggestions for what to use for a toddler?

My middle was flying DCs with the kids headband at 3. Get with Pigpen and see what he has right now. DC will, send you the headbands for free, just call them.

Before headphones were so "everywhere"... my kids (even as infants) used what was then called Lee Sonic Ear Plugs. They came in three sizes (S,M, and L). I even had to use a Small because of the size of my ear canal. They still might be better than full headsets for the little folks because even toddlers can't pull them out without assistance (and eat them). :)

At least the old ones had a tiny and quick-responding spring inside that shut the opening when hit with a percussive sound (such as the bang-bang of an engine or a gunshot). Never saw numbers but as a user, you could sure tell the difference. Normal sound, such as a conversation was not attenuated.

Here's a link to a quick check that I just did:

what a complete waste of money! Just pick up some cigarette butts, strip out the filter, insert into ear and bingo!

My daughters both used the DC Youth headsets from about 2 or 3.

It is now over 10 years old, and despite the use it still feels like the most solidly built headset of any I own!

That's good to know. I've been looking at both of these, but may be better off getting something a little higher quality like the DC's.

DC's don't have a line input.

I'd just get some ear plugs for the kid, don't waste money on some fancy headset they are going to just outgrow in a minute, they aren't at the state where they can hold conversation at that point anyways, so yeah, I'd just go earplugs.

And coming from you, I'm guessing I should buy used earplugs too? I know the only thing you buy new is food.

I'm looking for a headset that would be used until she's about 10. At first I just wanted something that she could listen to music on and would attenuate the ambient noise, but I was not very successful in finding that. There's no way I'm spending over $100 on something that would be used less than a year.

We did that in the Corps more often than I'd like to admit. 9mm brass with peanut butter in them also worked OK.

The David Clark youth headsets become "adult" headsets just by swapping out the "youth" band. In fact, if you've got a set of David Clark's, I think they'll send you the smaller band gratis. I put "youth" and "adults" in quotes because I have no problem wear the headset with the smaller band. It's just a bit snugger, but adjusted to the smallest position, it fits by 5 year old great.
