I received an email from Joliet Avionics offering a "limited number" of 396s for less than $1800 each. I've no affilation with them but this sounds pretty attractive. I think they are returns but come with warranty.

These units are excellent condition used units with a 120 day warranty. The units will have a 2006 Jeppesen database and the same accessories as a new unit.
