It is no longer sold but Garmin has an excellent track record in supporting their products for many years, unlike Lawrence (Ok, I bought a 2000 many years ago, grrr!). Garmin are still supporting the predecessor GPS's such as the 96, 196 and 296.
All you really to worry about (IMHO) is being able to get database updates as often as you are comfortable with, the occasional obstacle update and the very occasional terrain update (how often do mountains move?). Since I use the 396 for situation awareness and backup (the 182 has a 430W) I update the aviation database approx every 6 months.
