Hello, I'm going to be doing my long commercial cross country (300nm) on Monday and wanted to know if anyone has any ideas for fun places to fly to from Houston (KSGR). I'm looking for somewhere at least 250 miles away from KSGR that might be new or interesting. I've already flown to a few popular favorites like Fredericksburg, Austin, Galveston, Brenham, Fort Worth, etc. I've been thinking about heading East to Natchez.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks

Port Aransas/Mustang Island - it has a RNAV approaches. "Steal" Jay's car and run in to town for lunch. Well, maybe not such a good idea without Jay's permission...

Natchez is cool but there's nothing there you can't see in Vicksburg a little bit further up the river (casinos, southern cooking, civil war history, etc.)

I say that because if you go into Vicksburg/Tallulah Regional, not only is fuel cheap but you can tour the museum there for free. The P-51 is usually there if it's not at an airshow along with some other cool planes and lots of WWII memorabilia.

+1 on this.... There are lots of good eateries around Port A (La Playa for TexMex is very yummy!).

And do some approaches around Corpus Christi. This is a class C airspace and active enough with GA, Commercial, and military that you'll work with some top controllers and get a nice workout of your skills.

I did Laredo, walked across the border and shopped, then did San Antonio and overnighted on the riverwalk.

You could fly out to Midland/Odessa and visit the Commemorative Air Force HQ (or just wait for it to move to Dallas in a couple years). If you do, I highly recommend getting a crew car and getting the catfish at Eddie's--best catfish I've ever had in my life. Yes, in Midland.

New Orleans is an easy reach from Houston. Nothing near any of the airports (I usually use Lakeview when I go), but grab a cab to the Quarter and you won't need a rental car.

Little Rock is also a fun place to visit (so I hear; haven't made it there myself, yet).

Got that distance wrong. If you don't mind going just a bit further, you could go out someplace like Gulfport.
