So how quickly does an aircraft depreciate? After looking at financing costs, would it be more advisable to start out buying a 152 outright, flying for a while and save some more money, then sell the 152 and upgrade to 172, rinse and repeat?

The first plane I bought was a 1974 150L, I flew it for a year and a half and with some help from a couple of other pilots, we put right at 200 hrs on it. I sold it for $4000 more than I paid for it, so I feel I flew for the cost of fuel. The engine had a little over 1500 hrs, but it was one sweet little 150.

Just because other people do it, doesn't make it the right decision.

Just because other people don't do it, doesn't make it the wrong decision.

I'm with Bob. Figure out what works for you and decide accordingly.

Bad attitude from the "break your heart since 1975" hockey club. There is NOTHING as important as aviation. Don't do the math, just "invest". :D

Seriously, if you can't sleep at night it ain't worth it.
