I was wondering if A private pilot with instrument from United States can go down and rent or buy a plane for month or so maybe and just fly around the country and sightsee and how much trouble it would be.

You can. Getting the temporary license is pretty easy but it will generally be day VFR. Most rental places will want a local with you. Surprisingly, ATC is a lot stuffier there. I was surprised. Beautiful country. I flew from Brisbane to Sydney and back and also up to Frasier Island. Ask for orbits over Sydney Harbor. I did have an instructor with me at all times and I'm glad he was there. It made dealing with ATC and procedure differences easier. All flights, even training flights, required a flight plan. Approaches were often a VFR charted procedure. One included flying to the Target. Yep, it was a red circle on the roof of a Target store. Another required knowing that a large square concrete structure on a hill was a water reservoir used as a landmark on a procedure.

https://www.casa.gov.au/standard-page/converting-overseas-licences has the info regardng getting your licence etc. the killer is the police check - when they introduced that it killed many aviation tour businesses.
Check out http://www.aviationidaustralia.com.au/ also for the police check as an alternative to CASA - suggest you email both for info. Not sure if you can start the process before arriving in Australia.

An alternative is to go with recreational aircraft via https://www.raa.asn.au/

Procedures are similar enough to the USA that you won't get into too much trouble.
