Always lurked and read different posts on this site, finally decided to join and post....

I'm working on my PPL right now at KNEW (New Orleans)

If anyone knows of any flying clubs in the area that'd be awesome... trying to decide weather to buy, rent or join some sort of club/share when i'm done.

Welcome and glad you decided to post! I think Pookies ( Danielle ) is down in NOLA she may know of some clubs.

Only for three more days...

I've never used them, but Flight Academy of New Orleans comes up on the AirNav page; they seem to have a few airplanes for rent: http://877flynola.com/aircraft.php Is this who you're using right now for your PPL?

I was really surprised about the lack of available options for general aviation pilots in the Baton Rouge area, hopefully New Orleans has a bit more to offer. I've even contemplated the idea of starting a flying club myself, since I already own a 152 and I am looking to purchase a 177 now as well. Let me know if you find anything out, I'd be curious to hear about any clubs in Louisiana.

Hey
Got my PPL at Gulf Coast Aviation out of KNEW. They have a couple restart 172's for rent. Off and on they've also had a Seminole and an SR20 I think. Nice folks, but got to be a sort of a pain scheduling the planes so ended up buying...just in time to see gas go to $75/gal. Where are you training now?

I was highly disappointed with the Flight Academy of New Orleans. They had no understanding of the TSA regulations and demanded I show them my birth certificate (which I didn't have with me) before I could rent their airplane. Which is not required. (I was able to get an instructor from LNK to fax me an endorsement finally).

The "instruction" I received on the checkout was highly unimpressive. Total lack of basic airplane handling understanding. Constantly grabbing at the controls. Trying to slam aileron in to stop a wing drop in the stall. Etc.

I did a "discovery" flight with them, had the same impression. No one I know is in aviation and I had never been in a small plane before at the time. I still got an odd feeling, and took the 200 ft walk to gulf coast and signed up for classes!

A good way for you to start networking with local pilots is to attend one or more of the http://www.laflyins.com/ events. Get your cfi to go with you for an enroute lesson or drive to one nearby. Also, check out the calendar at http://www.laaviator.com for more local aviation activities. It's a good way to find out who has what in the way of clubs and partnerships in the area.
