Everyone Needs To Know When To Divert

Some passengers on the diverted flights haven't been happy with an unscheduled stop.

I guess they would have been happy landing off airport 15 miles short of the runway with no fuel onboard in a wadded up mess. Bunch of self centered whiners with no concept of reality.

It's staffers running numbers on computers.

How low a fuel load can we (safely) run, in order to reduce tankering costs? What % will end up diverting for fuel? What is the cost of the diversions, compare. Factor in customer dissatisfaction over the stops, to see what is highest profit.

Still, pretty awesome that they could turn the flights around in 45 minutes at an unplanned stop.

Yep, pretty impressive, and good decisions made.

The 757s mentioned in the article are already close to maxed out on fuel for normal winds on some trans Atlantic flights. Increasing the headwinds by 50% just requires more fuel than can be put on board.

The guys at Gander and some of the other typical divert bases really have their act together after decades of experience. Turning an airplane in 45 minutes doesn't surprise me.
