I know what you mean. Check out the main courtyard at the Desmond Hotel near KALB. It has exposed wooden rafters supporing the roof. They are laminated wood and each is about 10" x 30", solid. It took 2-1/2 acts of God to get the fire inspector approval during construction... but the fact is that those beams will retain their structural strength in a fire for a lot longer than steel will. Now I am not so sure about a thinner wooden firewall....
