I've heard airliners relay traffic for other pilots. Maybe assume there's a reception problem and perhaps I could help relay for them????

Lost contact under IFR.
There are procedures for the airliner to follow, but that may not be the best thing under the circumstances. Not possible to amend a clearance with lost comms.

Pre-takeoff checklist
If the controller wants someone to relay, he/she will contact an aircraft near the one they are trying to reach and ask them to relay. Likewise, if the aircraft wants someone to relay, they will ask for it. No point in getting involved unless someone requests you to relay. Your just as likely to end up stepping on someone as you are helping out.
