I wanted to know what is the difference between a wifi router and an access point because I want to extend my homenetwork which is currently using 3 wireless router(configured as APs) connected via LAN with a decent switch (TL-SG2424)

I'm totally aware that a router does routing, etc. and an access point is only like a switch for wireless. However an AP has less functions it is more expensive than a wifi router with the same specs (and even brand).

Seems like you know the technical part already. Cost difference is likely because not many people buy APs anymore. I get the power-over-Ethernet ones and they are a lot more expensive than it would be if I could just get a router

Many routers also have AP modes that disable the routing functions. Why they also tend to be less expensive than APs is something I've never fully understood.

It's okay now. My friend just gave me an 802.11ac that they don't use anymore and it's working perfectly fine. And I got it for free. lol
