Everything Offends Me
Dateline: Sunday, July 16, 2007: The Big Lebowski's at Da Boys.

All summer long, Da Boys were fighting and clawing their way through a rough season, which lead to nothing but upsetting loss after upsetting loss. Having had the mercy rule enacted during the previous two weeks, it was do or die time, a fight for the right to not be in the Rio Rancho Softball League cellar.

The Big Lebowski's came into the game with a record of 1-4 and Da Boys came in 0-6. Da Boys' defense had been picking up in the last few weeks, and the team was starting to work together as a unit.

The first inning started, and Big Lebowski's started off with a mini rally recording 2 runs after a series of 7 consecutive hits. Shortstop Nick Brennan made the first out by catching an infield pop fly. The very next batter grounded into a double play (6-4-3), ending an excruciating side.

Da Boys came out swinging, landing back to back singles, before hitting a wall. A strikeout followed by a double play ended the first inning, leaving the score 2-0 in favor of the Lebowski's and leaving 1 on base.

The second inning started out well for Da Boys, quickly recording two outs off of pop flies to the outfield. The Lebowski's began their rally. A walk, followed by 3 doubles netted 3 runs, leaving the score at 5-0. Thing were starting to look grim for Da Boys. The Lebowski's looked to be headed for more runs, when Pitcher Jacob Jaramillo retired the side with the 3rd out via strikeout. Da Boys had some work to do, and there wasn't much time left to do it.

B. Bivens led off the home side of the 2nd inning with a single up the gap. Brennan followed hitting into a fielder's choice, netting the first out on Billy Bivens. Brennan was left on base. L. Bivens stepped in and delivered a solid double, driving Brennan to third base. A rally was in the works. K. Kirby drove a solid grounder through the third baseman, bringing Brennan home. The score was now 5-1. A series of back to back hits left the score at 5-3, when T-Bird nailed a double, driving L. Bivens home and leaving K. Kirby on third. The score was 5-4, and getting close to knotted up. A strikeout by C. Kirby ended the 2nd inning, leaving 2 on base.

Da Boys were in full swing at this point, and the 3rd inning started and was over as quickly as it began. A strikeout, followed by two pop flies brought Da Boys back to the plate for an attempt to take the lead. B. Bivens started off with a single to left, followed by a double by Brennan. A rally ensued, which left the score sitting at 9-5 at the end of the third inning. Things were starting to look really positive for Da Boys, as this could be the slump breaker!

Unfortunately, the lead was not destined to last long. J. Jaramillo walked the first two batters of the inning, and the third teed off on a 3 run home run, clearing the bases and leaving the score 9-8. Back to back errors on Brennan at short and B. Bivens at third left runners at 2nd and 3rd, with no outs. The hard earned lead was slipping away. A solid grounder up the gap drove in the two runners that were in scoring position and giving the Lebowski's the lead at 10-9. A strikeout followed by a double play ended the visiting side of the 4th inning.

The time limit was quickly approaching, and the umpire declared that there was only a few minutes left to play. Mark Johnson started off the home side of the 4th inning by nailing a stand up triple, and putting himself in scoring position as the tieing run. J. Jaramillo attempted to sac fly, but the outfielder dropped the ball, leaving him on first, and driving in the tieing run. B. Bivens grounded out, advancing J. Jaramillo to 2nd base. Brennan walked to first, leaving runners on first and second base. The umpire declared that there were only 54 seconds left on the time limit, and that L. Bivens would be the last batter.

Knowing it was do or die time, all of the runners were prepared to go for it. L. Bivens nailed a solid shot up the 3rd base line, the third baseman fielded it and thew it to second, but the throw was wild. The 2nd baseman scrambled for the ball as Jaramillo rounded third and began to sprint towards home. The throw came in a second too late, and Jaramillo scored the winning run.

Da Boys win! Da Boys win! The Big Lebowski's moved into last place and Da Boys advanced to 2nd to last. Next week is another pivotal matchup, as they play the Celebration Baptist Church (2-3) for the chance to move up a few slots, one step above Northrup Grumman (2-1), to sit solidly in 5th place!

NOTE: I put the apostrophe in the Big Lebowski's name, because they were apparently dumb enough to think that is correct, and that is their official name.
