Grounded: Rockland considers limiting drone use

Hood drafted the proposal after Sheriff Louis Falco expressed concerns over potential illicit uses of drones in county property, particularly around the county jail complex.

Falco said he has been alarmed by numerous reports of drones smuggling drugs, knives or guns into jails and prisons elsewhere.

For some reason, I thought that smuggling drugs or weapons into jails and prisons was already illegal.

There is a legal argument that local governments can't regulate airspace or drone use.

Even if the feds don't intervene, I don't see how passing a law with the relatively mild penalties of this one would prevent people from doing things that are already illegal. And this one seems to me to go way beyond prohibiting illicit or unsafe activities.
