Belief in history:
This is Thomaston's Montpelier - replica of Major General Henry Knox's home.
General Knox was the United States' first Secretary of War, appointed by President George Washington. His original mansion was demolished in the early 1900s to make way for railroad tracks to be laid, coming from Rockland and heading to Portland and points south. The only structure not demolished became the Railroad Station until early 1960s when passenger service was discontinued. It remains today as headquarters of Thomas Historical Society.
Montpelier is open for tours, contains original late 1700s furniture, fabrics, and other artifacts from that era.
