In my new plane, I'm trying to understand how the audio system works and how to get both cockpit voices and ATC onto a digital recorder. Here's my setup (what came with the plane).

Here's what I believe I know.

The intercom unit takes audio spoken into the mics and sends it to the other headset and also back into the speaker's own ears. It also sends that audio out and into the radio. If the pilot keys the transmit button, that adds a signal to that input into the radio instructing the transmitter to transmit the input out into the ether. The other connector at the radio sends audio which is received from ATC or other aircraft into the intercom unit and then into the ears of any headsets connected to it.

The cable I bought for recording audio goes in between the output from the radio and the input into the intercom (apparently, anyway--the jacks in the radio aren't labeled). It still sends the signal to the intercom (I can hear other pilots speaking) but also takes the signal and sends it to whatever device the 1/8" plug is plugged into via a splitter.

I attacahed a digital audio recorder to the 1/8" jack coming from the splitter, and other aircraft received by my radio were recorded. However, when I spoke, that was not recorded, although I could hear myself on my headset.

Can anyone shed light on what I'm missing?

Thanks,
Jay

Splitter needs to go between your headset and the intercom if you want your recording to pick up intercom audio. That way it hears everything you hear. Or is that not what you want?

I do want to hear everything, and that's my problem at this early stage. I was hearing only incoming, not everything. I'll give that a try tomorrow. Thanks!
