I am bringing a friend who got his PPL 25 years ago, logged 150 hrs and is just now getting back into flying.

Unfortunately, AOPA is telling me that "camping is full".

Does anyone have a camping reservation there Friday night and extra space for a small tent?

    Thanks,
    Dan

I'm going, but I live here. You might find me helping park airplanes on Friday night, or working at the Peak Aviation Center booth on Saturday.

Wait - are people camping at COS???

Doesn't seem like a camper friendly field, IMHO.

Never been there, but from what I've seen, AOPA has arranged a one-time exception.

All you really need to camp for one night is a small swath of grass. Heck, I could even setup right next to my plane on a paved ramp. I assume I'd get chased off though...?

I made a reservation at the Radisson, but I will cancel if we can find a spot to camp...

Ok, so apparently when they said "camping is full, get a hotel" what they really meant was "camping next to your aircraft is not available, but you can camp a short distance away from your aircraft."

    False alarm!

Personally, I live here and I would NEVER camp here. I have seen too many rattlesnakes on the taxiway and in the grass.

    honest!

TenHi Flyers will be there with a booth and all 3 airplanes. Sadly, I will not - prior commitments elsewhere.

I will be there. We've got a booth at the event. However, I'm staying in Denver with old friends all week.

Maybe there's an extra spot in the house. I'm happy to ask. :)

I am driving down Friday midday, and also encouraging as many as possible Denver/Boulder/Fort Collins area folks to go. I'm hoping for a very fun day and a half.

Is it worth trying to arrange a POA meetup?

Might be a good thing that the fly-in is next weekend. Then again, maybe not. Ya never know this time of year.

I apologize to everyone planning on attending. I am asking the weather gods for gobs of rain so that my race that day gets rained out since I have to be out of town.

Thinking I'm not going to fly in. Too much stress.

Can't be more stress than OSH. (Right?)

Also, I notice that they have arrival points to the east and north. If coming from the SW, are they expecting people to fly to one of these two points?

Yep.. Fly to the East and come in via the Ellicot arrival. I do that when arriving from the South anyway. It is just a few minutes of a flight added on, and it will make sequencing you around the airliners much smoother as they depart to the south.

Is there a lot of airline traffic to COS?

sometimes there are a few an hour, and sometimes there are less. Probably 20-30 a day I am guessing. This link will give you some info on which airlines fly here. https://flycos.coloradosprings.gov/...o-springs-airport/flight-information/airlines Some of them fly 1-2 flights a day, some of them up to 7-8.

They are generally smaller airliners. I learned to fly here and flew traffic patterns while they were taking off and landing on the 'other' runway. It is not much to be concerned about as long as you are with Tower on the radio. I'm pretty sure that they'll have the A-Team on at the tower for this event too.

I wonder if it'd just be easier to go IFR.

Everything is easier IFR. Just get ATC to do the work for you. They're the ones making 6-figures a year.

If camping's full, just find a snuggle buddy.

Probably not most of the ones at Colorado Springs. From the tours that I have done at the tower, it appears that COS is heavily utilized as a training tower. Granted, there may be a few that make that kind of $$, but for the most part, I'd say they are near an intro wage for the profession here.

What events are part of the Fly-In?

Cirrus has an event Friday night, Recreational Aircraft Foundation has something Saturday, etc. What else?

The seminar schedule can be found at http://www.aopa.org/Community-and-E...lorado-Springs-Fly-In/Educational-Experiences

Exhibits/Aircraft display can be found at http://www.aopa.org/Community-and-E...rado-Springs-Fly-In/Exhibits-Aircraft-Display

Hope this helps. The AOPA fly-in site is pretty horribly difficult to naviagate.

What part of town are you in? All 3 planes from TenHi are going from BJC to COS for this - I'm can't go but I might be able to put you in touch with the club members who are - perhaps they might have an available seat...

Emailed your contact to the club members who have the planes scheduled. Asked them to call you if they have an open seat.

Wow, what a fun and great day!
It started with pancake breakfast, three cups of great "Flying High" coffee (got to thank owner Rob personally), and a nice conversation with Shane "Mr. Squawk Shoppe" himself. Got to spend time with Rod Machado, too!

Friday night had great food from Cirrus and the Recreational Aviation Foundation, plus AOPA brought BBQ. Lunch Saturday was clever - a bunch of local food trucks. A lot of cool, neat airplanes and a whole lot of people having fun.

Like a mini-mini Oshkosh watching those who flew in taxi out and take off at the end, too.

From what I heard, turnout was more than expected and people really seemed to be having fun. Perfect weather, too.

Great to meet you too!! Weather was perfect, and when the F-16 did the high speed low-pass in front of the hangar I felt my teeth rattling out of my face!

Wife and I went mainly to try on the new Mooney and meet Shane to learn more about his headsets. The Mooney felt great and so did Shane's headsets. Also tried on the AVG headsets. While nice, not my cup of tea, fit wise.
