Cessna To Build Airplanes In China

They have been building the 162 Skycatcher in China for at least 2 years. Unless you don't consider light sport a plane.

I doubt seriously if the Cessna Citation qualifies as LSA. ;)

makes perfect sense to me, especially as China opens it's airspace. Why build them here and ship them over when they can just build them there?

I'll try to avoid SZ... shipping technology and jobs out of this country doesn't help our workers and our economy very much.

Ahhhh, we are talking jet aircraft. We could FLY them there? ;)

The problem is like all of the other intellectual property they have stolen from us, they will copy this technology and reproduce it without paying royalties. Certainly, at minimum US workers and their families will suffer by shipping our jobs overseas.

Maybe we should have a discussion about sending jobs and technology the competitors.

Maybe this should have been opened in the SZ. My bad.

I wonder if import duties play a role here. I don't know the duties on a jet, but import duties are typically 10% plus or minus. A 10% duty on a $20 million plane is substantial. With the Asian free trade zone, Cessna can avoid paying duty on any product produced in the FTZ. So in addition to saving $20/hr on labor, Cessna is creating the opportunity to transform that 10% duty into 10% of additional margin, depending on how effectively the customer negotiates.

And yes, transferring the jobs and technology overseas stinks, particularly for a product that essentially self-delivers.

Nawww. Open it here. That Guns & Oshkosh thread is still running out here. I think it is turning into Guns & Abortion.:yikes:

If Cessna kills a Skycatcher before its born, it can never grow up to be a Citation X.

Airplane abortion? There's a novel topic.

I dont think the flycatchers are touched by Cessna employees throughout their production. They are built by a network of subcontractors in China, then shipped 'green' in containers to Yingling aviation and put together/painted at their facility.

Completion is moving in-house. Will now be done at Cessna's Indpendence plant.

That's what this page is best known for..

thread creep.

Do you think we will see cheap Cessna knock off's on sale at harbor freight soon?

And just like the drill-bits, you can buy a couple of spares for the price of one quality product.

unless accuracy is a consideration. A 1/4" drill bit is no d*** good for anything if isn't actually 1/4".

Interesting topic,,, Here is a daily snapshot of my website... Either the Chinese are REALLY thirsty for aviation stuff or looking to grab as much intellectual property as fast as possible..:dunno:

What a concept!! Disposable aircraft. :dunno:

Well, I have a 'Champion' brand generator that I bought in 2004 and it is still running strong. Any branded product like Honda or Kohler would have cost multiples.

You are right. I also have a Champion 4000W that runs my camper. Great little genny for the $. However when it dies throw it away and buy another.

Depends on what dies. They have been so diligent in copying Briggs & Stratton that the local small-engine guy could probably replace something like a governor. Chances are though, when it goes, it's gone.

I agree with the copying. My 4000W has The 6.5 Chinese ohv engine it a copy or clone of the Honda GX160 engine. The parts are interchangeable. We raced alcohol dirt gocarts and WKA Word karting Association rules required using flat head briggs engine and that got expensive.
There is now a "clone" class that uses a $100 harbor freight 6.5hp. They are great little engines. We would pull the governor out and run a whole season turning 6000 RPM. At the end of the season throw it away and buy another. It was a great cheap class for kids to get started racing. Back to the point if the motor craps out you have options. If The generator head dies it is not worth fixing. You can buy a new 4000W champion at cabelas for around $400.
