CARF! Sats keep falling on my head.

The NOTAM (NOTice To AirMen) warning reads:

A "CARF" (Central Altitude Reservation Function) designation indicates a NOTAM intended to keep commercial and private flights clear of military operations, and SFC-UNL means the height band of this warning zone reaches from the surface to "unlimited" altitude - in other words all the way into space. The UTC time referred to is the same as UK time, so the zone exists from 0230 to 0500 on Thursday morning for British readers.

Hey! They claimed the PATRIOT missile worked during Gulf War 1. Then people took a close look at the videos and the debris and realized that none were actually hits.

Fox is reporting that the FAA has issued a NOTAM over a large area of the Pacific tonight:

It's a CYA for the gov & airlines after the stray missile theory of TWA 800. If space junk downs your flight then just accept it's not your day.

I've heard speculation (and I think the idea appeared in a Tom Clancy novel, which means it has to be true) that there's the possibility of using the Standard Missile in an ABM (anti ballistic missile) role... Wonder if maybe this had something to do with it?
