Can you patch up my Airbus?

A friend of mine was flying DC-8 cargo into Iraq during Desert Storm. He said the DC-8 was a great plane as he picked up small arms fire in the wing and said he didn't feel a thing.
 
Very likely the crew had no idea the severity of the damage. They knew the blew a tire, but it is not uncommon for a flight to continue to the destination. Its not a safety of flight issue till they land, and you might as well get the pax to where they want to be, and have the aircraft weight a lot less at the same time. The exception would be if they were going somewhere with no maintenance support.
