Can anyone identify this flying boat?

This is a photograph of my grandfather at the controls of some type of flying boat, possibly around 1930. Can anyone identify it?

Well I think it's a Curtiss F if I had to guess.

Yep. First thought it might be a Benoist, but your picture is pretty much conclusive.

Was your grandfather in the navy?

No. I never knew him, as he died in 1950, ten years before I was born. I think he was just a wealthy guy who could afford a lot of toys.
