And we only started 2H2012 yesterday. My thought is that these fines are still low, and potentially in the range of "the cost of doing business." As a point of comparison, rough number it would cost about 45k to fuel up a 737. United cancels some flights and they are back in the black.

Airline fines are for the press. Airlines never actually pay them, or at least the full amount. Usually they pay around 10% of whatever the fine is.

This is certainly eye-opening. Can you point out some documentation for this claim? I don't mean to gainsay anything, just looking for some confirmation (beyond, "I heard it over a glass of bourbon".

Well, I guess I mostly remember that from my 121 days. CBS did a story on Airline Fine Reduction but the amounts the fine was lowered is much less than my stated '90%'.

CBS story

However, I did find a case where the fine was reduced by 90%.

90% Fine Reduction Case

Maybe I overstepped with the 10% figure. Point remains though that they seldom collect the full fine levied.

I liked Colgan's deal, and it shows you what the FAA thinks about crew. $1.5MM for training FAs on the wrong fire extinguishers, $150k for inadequate crew rest of flight and cabin crew.

The fine is just an attention getter. The company complies and Feds knock down the fine. It's always constant negotiating game.
