SOUTH PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER)--Coast Guard South Portland reports that a 911 call came in that a small plane went down in Belfast Bay around six o'clock.

Coast Guard crews are searching for a person in the water off belfast Sunday night.
The Coast Guard says a 911 report at about 6:15 Sunday night indicated that a chartered plane went down in Belfast Bay. Some people on shore say they hear a plane go over and later heard a "pop" sound. That sound was apparently heard by some people on Islesboro as well.

A boat crew from Rockland and a Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod are on scene searching for the missing person. Maine Marine Patrol and local fire and police departments are also on scene to help.

An oil slick and debris matching the missing plane's description have been found in the area. It is unknown whether the plane was taking off or landing at the Belfast airport. The airport has no control tower to monitor air traffic.

The identity of the pilot is unknown .
