So named because of the Air Force blue and white paint scheme, and it was smaller and far more sleek than the Twin Beech and Bamboo Bomber that it replaced.
Even when given later AF or Army paint schemes, the "Blue Canoe" name stuck.

Agree completely! But that's a straight tail. Straight tails are never ugly.

Sorry, I know it's sacrilege...sky king and all that...but I think the 310 is the bugliest twin out there. Well, except for the 320. 337s are somewhat homely but don't hold a candle.
