There are some internet sites dedicated to the Texas City explosion. Very fascinating.

Pretty spectacular fire, we evacuated our site in Bryan at 4PM as a precaution. El Dorado isn't really a lot more than a bulk fertilizer plant, they did have quite an inventory of various blends of fertilizers. Those fires are pretty self sustaining, better to just let them burn themselves out.

How much you want to wager that those two small planes were flying circles around the fire and weren't simply transiting the area...

If I what I was told was correct, that was the case with at least one of them. My paternal grandfather (who lived the last few years of his life in southern TX) had neighbors who lived in the Texas City area at the time of the explosion and I remember one of them making a comment about one of the planes being up "sightseeing" around the smoke column at the time of the first truly catastrophic explosion. The phrase "damn fool" was used to describe the pilot.
