A BA A319 made an emergency landing at Heathrow last week. This video appears to show an unusual situation.

Video shot from the ground shows smoke streaming from the #2 engine...then it shows onboard video taken during landing of the #1 engine, which is missing the side cover.

Further video taken of the aircraft on the ground shows the #2 engine, which is also missing the side cover.

What the heck happened here?

I would hazard a guess that the maintenance crew messed up and didn't secure the panels.

Great quote:
Aviation safety investigator David Gleave told Sky News it is not unusual for cowlings to fall off during the flight.

"In this case, the failure to do up the cowlings is not a terribly significant safety issue," he said.

"When the cowling fell off, yes it did damage the fuel pipe and there was a fire, but I don't think the whole safety of the plane was jeopardised because the crew were able to shut the engine down quite safely and return to land."

Wow...although it's unlikely, the loss of the doors could have brought down the aircraft. Fire, horizontal stabilizer or hydraulic system damage, etc.

Scary stuff.
