The original "I don't know it all" of aviation.
As I learn more about the different aircraft on my possibly purchase list, and virtually kick the tires as I peruse the sale sites, I frequently come across aircraft that have the older autopilots (such as the single axis Century IIB).

I've also read and learned about the benefits of the more modern designs that do two axis and can accept inputs from the GPS and GPSS systems.

  • Is there an upgrade path?
  • Are the servo's of the older unit compatible with the newer one?
  • Do you stay with the same manufacturer or can you switch?

Upgrade path? sorta, altitude hold can be added using a STEC unit since pitch and roll can be totally separate units.

Servo's generally aren't compatible. The old servos from Century have limited parts availability.

No reason to stay with a particular manufacturer just because some of their parts happened to be in the aircraft. Everything will get changed out if replacing an autopilot. Figure 10+ amu/axis for autopilot installs. Coupling to nav units adds to the cost. Gotta shop around to get that good of a price.
