OK so now that the following people are interested I think I should start a thread. The fly-in will take place on Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19 at the Shelter Cove Airport 0Q5 - I will select a less foggy "alternate airport" soon. That way we can plan to meet up on the 18 / 19 no matter what the weather..... even if I have to drive.

It appears Shelter Cove is a "destination airport" and has:

    Salmon fishing
    Camping
    Hiking
    Golfing

    http://www.airnav.com/airport/0Q5/

    http://www.sojourner2000.com/flyin/index.htm#comments

I tried calling the Airport Manager (per Airnav) to ask some questions but got his voicemail. Hoping he will call me back.

Entire airport is surrounded by a nine hole golf course. Open to the public All year round. Better ocean and mountain views then Pebble Beach.

Everything of interest is within close walking distance:

multiple places of lodging from basic motel rooms to units with kitchens facilities, fireplaces, hot tubs, etc. To a bed & breakfast. Several of these are right on the water.

4 Restaurants, Coffee House, Pub, or Deli some with Bars. All with ocean views.

    Tidepools, Little Black Sand Beach

Some Of the best Salmon Fishing & Bottom Fishing in Northern California. Charter Boat trips are available.

Campground is adjacent to the airport - Tent campers are welcome.

Public picnic sites & Tables are available right on the water in several locations.

Sounds like a good weekend. I am VFR only, so the weather will need to cooperate.

I've decided we should have an alternate airport in case weather doesn't allow us to go to Shelter Cove.... Or some sort of "back up plan".

Me too which is why I'm going to do some research. Maybe I can come up with ideas in case of fog or rain (hey the rain has been odd this year).

I did suggest FOT earlier as an alternate. It is near Humboldt State Park. Someone would probably need to fly into Eureka and pick up a car (about 20 minutes driving, if I remember), which is closer to the coast and might get fog. Another 10 to 15 minutes of driving from FOT gets you into the State Park and the Avenue of the Giants. Lots of places to camp and also plenty of cabins and small hotels. It is just not as centralized as Shelter Cove and not as walkable.

I could get a car. I think the key to this whole thing is one of us (for example, me) going - no matter what. I've seen other sites try to organize meetings and people are wishy washy.

Let me talk to my boyfriend and my flight school this weekend - seeing both on Saturday - and by Sunday I should have a definite answer regarding the date. I can plan activities, alternates, and info after that first step is "done".

Are there any weekends in August that don't work for you?

    Webcams for Shelter Cove:

    http://northcoastaviation.com/shelter_cove/shelter_cove_south.htm

When you fly into Shelter Cove, stay at the Inn of the Lost Coast at the north end of the field. They will see you land and come pick you up. Pilots can also use the van to drive around the area. The hotel is excellent, the service is great and its right on the water. There is no fuel but Little River has 100LL about 45 miles south and Ukiah has 100LL and jet about 60 miles S/E. There are several fields to visit between Santa Rosa and Shelter Cove. A great place to fly.

FOT is at least 10 miles inland, which should help a lot with regard to fog. Garberville (O16) seems closer, but no car rentals that I can see.

Backup plan for bad weather over a wider area in August might be to stay home, because it is a 7 hour drive from our place. :(

August is open for me, but I would need to check with my wife. It is at least a 2.5 hour flight. If she is up for it we'd probably stay at a hotel there; otherwise I'd go solo and just spend the day.

See above for hotels. Can't wait to tell the BF it has salmon fishing. He just bought all the gear for that and I just got my fishing license.

Doesn't make much of a difference. There are no instrument approaches or departure procedures for Shelter Cove.

I looked at Garberville, when I flew into the area for a race. It looks like there is a hotel nearby, but no rental cars that I could find. I ended up flying into Eureka and did not have any fog issues that weekend, but Eureka does get fog. It is a 5 hour drive for me, so driving would not be my first option. Crescent City is also a nice area, but again, fog issues.

Sure, lots of times. It's a fun place to go, but it's way out in the middle of nowhere. Great place to go for an afternoon of playing on the beach. Well, the rocks on the beach, anyway. I've only gone for day trips and packed in food, so I couldn't give you much advice on the local accomodations. No services, so carry enough fuel to get back.

The marine layer is always problematic this time of year, but like anyplace else on the Northern coasts it normally ("normally") burns off by early afternoon. I usually call one of the local lodges there and ask them about the weather conditions before I go.

Keep extra alert when you land. I had to go around once to avoid a group of golfers midfield.

It does warn about the golfers on airnav. There are also webcams which could help us "see" the fog before we take off. Not sure how long it would take me to drive but I might go regardless of if I fly or not, especially if I make hotel reservations rather than camping.

I will pick a date no later than Sunday. Not sure if I can change the title of this thread to "August" since July is looking bad and August will give me more time to plan.

UPDATE: THE DATE HAS BEEN SELECTED. DATE IS SATURDAY, AUGUST 18 AND SUNDAY, AUGUST 19

Isn't that the southeastern shore of the Big Island where the lava flows into the ocean?

The opportunity to take out a foursome of boring golfers, with a Cessna wing, adds value to this plan.

Wish I could make one like this. I am flying from Montana to be in SoCal on the 18-19 Aug. A stop there would be great along the way. But, I don't see it being set for shortly before nor shortly after that weekend. I can't make two long trips in that month. Oh well, maybe another time...

Not sure if I can take all the credit on this one, but, once I get dates together I'm going to start making phone calls.

What I've learned about events is that if someone organizes them, provides all the information / activities / possibly food - people will attend.

    My tentative plan now:

Get a dog sitter. Take the BF (or not) in the cheaper 150. Stay at a hotel that will let me use their van. Drive the van to shuttle pilots around (just like you Tim). Shuttle pilots to activities like hiking, fishing, going out to eat, etc.

Edit: will a fishing pole fit in the 150? I guess I'll need to get gas somewhere just to be safe. The estimated time (little under two hours at 80 knots) brings me close to my reserves. The plane goes roughly 3-4 hours.

That one extra fuel stop in the (cheaper) 150 will make it (more expensive) than the 172.

    Thanks for the efforts!

Looks like everything in the town is within a mile of the airport; walking distance. For trips outside that area then a vehicle would be nice. However, speaking only for myself, I'd be satisfied with walking some of the hiking trails, since the California Coastal Trail winds around the area; here's a map of that segment:
    http://californiacoastaltrail.info/...ction=DisplaySection&CountyId=3&SectionId=226

According to the 1985 C-152 Information Manual I have, the baggage area is about 38 inches deep by 24 inches wide at the narrow end. Conservative diagonal across the floor would be about 44 inches. But floor to ceiling just behind the seats claims to be about 36 inches, so a box corner-to-corner diagonal would be about 57 inches. But you might have some issues getting something that long in or out easily.

If you are still talking Shelter Cove, it is indeed small enough that you don't need a car. And I doubt you will be able to secure a loaner or a rental.

I like to hike, as well and the coast is right there. Apparently there is golf, for those that golf. It doesn't sound like we will need to drive anywhere. There is only so much activity you can cram into a couple of days.

Kimberly, I am not sure what kind of fishing you are preparing for. If it surf fishing, you need a pretty big pole. Salmon fishing off the coast, you probably need to charter a boat anyways and they probably provide gear. It looks like Garberville has fuel.
