Leslie and I are planning to go to Summit 2012 in Palm Springs this October. Anyone else planning to make the trip? It would be nice to get together with other PoAers while there!

No replies? I was going to start a thread.

    Two questions:

    1. What day(s) are you there

    2. Tell me why I should pay the fees they are charging to go, what's it all about?

A good friend of mine said he is going, I just emailed him to find out if the pilot he is flying with has a four seater. I'd still want to rent a car and get an out of town hotel to save money and of course get the time off work. But flying GA would be more fun than flying commercial.

GA would be more fun. I did that to Summit when it was in Connecticut last year. If I stay in SF for Fleet Week, I may rent and fly over if California Airways has a decent plane available.

Or you could just fly mine. Wait, you meant from SoCal didn't you. Anyways if you are in town you have to let me know. Zero promises but small chance we'll take the boat out again for the show. Free, and the most awesome way to view. There are still seats (and I'm tempted) on other boats that offer lunch and champagne. Now that I've seen it from the Bay I won't see it any other way ever again!

Yes, I was that close. No, the boat I was on was not that nice. We were surrounded by hundreds of boats off Alcatraz.

I found a radio geeks site that figured out the airboss freq and I bought a cheap radio and turned it on.

For that pic and others I loved to hear "smoke on!"

I went to an AOPA summit a number of years ago when it was in Long Beach. I got a lot from the various programs and was glad I went. OTOH AOPA charges plenty. In my opinion it is worth it to go at least once.

I went to the one in Long Beach as a detour from Reno to Phoenix, an utter waste of time, fuel and money IMO.:nonod:

That's what I thought. However, my friend said the parties were cool. Then again, some people's idea of a "party" are different than others.

I suspect the parties at Reno are better than the ones at Summit! OTOH, I've managed to meet a lot of people whose names are familiar at Summit, and now consider some of them to be friends! Kind of like OSH, it's about the people. Plus, I have an advantage in that I don't need to pay for admission as an ASN volunteer. It's just the cost of getting there and lodging.

I am/was checked out at California Airways at Hayward, but the best single engine they seem to have online at the moment is a 172S model. Ideally Leslie would join me in SF for the flight to Palm Springs, and I don't really want to do a flight like that with the two of us with luggage in a 172S. When I was out there a couple years ago when Summit was in Long Beach, the winds were 50Kt. OTOH, a quick plan thrown together seems to show V/T routes with maximum terrain en route around 6,000 and MEAs of 9,000.

Oh I misunderstood then. I thought you two were flying commercial to Palm Springs. Regardless, if you are in / around SF, let me know. I can take you two for a Bay Tour in my 172.

We haven't firmed up the plans yet. I will probably be flying commercial to SF for JavaOne. I may then stay a couple of days extra for Fleet Week. Then either fly directly from SF to Palm Springs, or fly back to Chicago and then back out to Palm Springs a day or two later. Leslie may or may not be in SF for anything other than a plane change as she flies Chicago to Palm Springs.

Confused yet, because I sure am!:D

If you would like a Bay Tour, there are several POA members on here who can vouch for me (they were my passengers)! I would be happy to show you the beatiful city from the air. It is a flight I've gotten down to a science, can be done in less than 1.0 on the Hobbs. My favorite flight.

I went to Summit last year in Hartford. It was fun, but the weather was crappy on and off. I wish I could go to the one in Palm Springs...much nicer than Hartford :)

Yeah the weather was crappy, but it was still good enough to allow me to fly in IFR without difficulty. Palm Springs is too far to be able to afford to fly to, so we'll go commercially. Like Airventure, it's about the people.

Not this year. It's kind of a protest against where AOPA is going.....

    Selling pilot snacks.
    Selling "wellness tests"
Selling just about anything you can think of
    Admitting nonpilots into membership....
    Wine Club.

They are going the way of the AMA, with a similar effect on their relevance!

I let AOPA go this year for those reasons and more, I don't think their lobbying efforts are going in the right direction. Business Aviation has its own representation.

They did, they became a wine and cheese club and travel agency for Business Aviation and their jets.

AOPA was against sport pilot. Not sure why any pilot would support them.

Brand new member here but wanted to add my name to the list of attendees to this years AOPA summit. I am in if anyone is setting up a gathering or just a few beers at the nightly socials. Always like to meet new friends.

I wanted to go, but I am getting more and more involved in the flight training / required training for the Coast Guard Aux so it is looking less likely.

With fleet week in October, on the same weekend as another airshow I'm attending, plus my field trip for the Private Pilot class, plus the monthly meetings of all the aviation things I belong to - I'm all piloted out!!!

I think Henning is right . . . oh, wait. Anyway.

I've been 3 times in the last 10 - last year was great to meet Kareem and a few others for the breakfast but I'm really glad I did not spend $10 for 2 dollar size pancakes and a 45 min wait. I hope they make a better effort this year.

The airplane displays are nice but no one talks to you until they think you are a mark.

The displays inside are interesting but many of us know whats for sale already and the deals you get at the trade show you can get any time simply by calling up and asking. Most trade show deals, are not.

I've had a moment now and again to speak with someone from one of my airplane vendors who was interesting and helpful - but again - a phone call could get the same information. AOPA's seminars are driven toward the person / pilot who knows nothing about the subject- so many will not get much from their much touted seminars. Rod Machado is funny but he's got the same patter every year -

Overall - its not worth even close to the $35 you spend in advance for a day pass . . .

Full disclosure: I have not been to their 'parties' - but if you want - you can all come over the Sunday after the event ends, land at POC/CCB - you can come to the house and we can sit in the pool, BBQ some meat and veges, shoot the shlt and drink cheaper . . . .
