CMA..... sounds foggy with a four hour wait for lunch to me. Wait, that's every Saturday there. It'd be nice if they could pick a place in Ca with better weather. BFL/MCC/CIC
Zero of these are anywhere close to the Midwest. Our country is just too damn big to keep everyone happy all the time...
With the medical changes I'm really hoping to hit Gastons thi year. Last time was......2008. Wow, that long ago.
Edit - This thread is about AOPA fly-ins. NOT PoA fly-ins. There're plenty of Gaston's threads. Just ask "he who shall not be named" and he'll fill you in on all the rulez.
Agreed. With the limited number of fly-ins they do per year, it is not easy to cover the whole country. The first year, they actually came to my area. I was excited and thought that it would be a regular occurrence. I quickly learned that it was just a rare coincidence. Afterall, a fly-in is for us to fly in, right? Last year, they had nothing closeby. This year, they have one in OK. Close enough for me! IMHO, if they stopped kissing California's butt every year, they could move that one fly-in to a more useful location.
CMA is great! You get to practice your instrument skills, and the secret to short wait times at the Waypoint is go there for breakfast and be wheels down and chocked by 0800. regards ~Marc
Yeah, no IR yet and only a single KX-125 in the stack so no Morning CMA runs for me. I do love their food though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Going to Norman, quick hop from Central TX, and my wife's grandparents live an hour away by car. Will be my first fly-in after getting my license!
Where from in CTX? I think a few of us from Nuevo Kalyfornya (Austin area) will be going up there together.
KGTU, maybe I'll drop into hangar 2 and borrow your bird . If not I'll prolly fuel you just before I leave, lol!
Having them in coastal areas restricts possible fly in and drive in directions to basically 180* or a semi circle. Having them further inland opens it up to 360*. This would theoretically double the number of people who could attend.
Oh sh*t, it's you! Hah, we'll form a convoy. Imagine the line for takeoff at 18, all asking for left turnout north. I wonder if Matt's head would start spinning.
Thought about CT but a buddy who went last year says its a real $%#! Show, unlike SnF and Osh folks didn't follow procedures and it became a bee hive.
Re-thinking my decision to attend at KOUN in September. I found out that the fly-in is free only as far as landing goes. Everything else is paid. Even for members. I don't know whether I want to spend more on the ground than I will for 4 hrs of fuel. Convince me to attend an event and pay to see people who are other paying members.
I am planning to go to the one in September as a Volunteer. Preferably marshalling airplanes versus custodial duties
I registered to attend the CT event and the only thing I was charged for was the $10 camping fee. Unless you are referring to the workshops. Then, yes, I agree. The amounts they are charging for those make me not want to attend them.
I will be at the Norman event. Only on Saturday though. As far as I can tell from https://www.aopa.org/community/events/aopa-fly-ins/2017-aopa-fly-ins/norman many of the Friday activities cost money, but most of the Saturday stuff is free (except food and the Rusty Pilots seminar, though the RPS is free to members). It looks like the Friday workshops are all-day things (9-4), so I'd expect they'd be pretty in-depth and possibly worth the registration fee. And they even have an Oshkosh-like NOTAM complete with arrival procedures, holding patterns and so on. Wonder how many people will know that there's a NOTAM, read it and actually comply with it?
