Annoying little Pop-ups from Taskbar Apps

These are the ones that show up in the TASKBAR from applications running there and demanding SERVICE! My favorite is the WINDOWS/XP message that says your virtual storage is low. "CLICK HERE"
So short of murdering the application (okay, exiting it), how can I keep these annoying little pop-ups away?
And yes, I know what these applications are and approve their use. I just don't like the pop-ups.

If what you mean are the System Notification balloons, you can disable them by following the instructions found here.

If some other application (legitimate or otherwise) is generating the messages, that's a whole 'nuther story.
