American plays "Let's hold passengers for 8 hours" game

"Pizza was delivered, but only 50 to 70 slices, along with 30 bags of chips"

Good God, they could deliver a pizza, but they couldn't let people off the plane?

Remember, Mike, we just don't get it.

I have to say that if they found it safe enough to let someone up to deliver pizza it must have been safe enough to take off passengers. Okay, maybe a few at a time with individual escorts, but come on. Over multiple hours, there's no reason I can see that they couldn't make the decision that the flight wasn't likely to go and get those who wanted off the plane.

I find that people tend to be pretty cooperative when they're leveled with and the facts are given to them. It's when they've treated like mushrooms that problems start.

* mushrooms are kept in the dark and fed "manure".

There are those who will defend it, but I think popular public opinion will sway those in power to somehow curtail this activity. We have laws for just about everything else these days.

"An isolated incident such as the one in Midland should not be used to justify broad new regulations about delayed flights, says David Castelvetter, spokesman for the Air Transport Association, which represents large airlines. "By all accounts, American handled it well, given the severe weather conditions," Castelvetter says."

Apparently he didn't hear any of the accounts from the people who were actually kidnapped. Long live GA.

Chip:

Did I miss the fact that the extra has been sold? Guess I'm way outta touch.

Best,

Dave

American doesn't serve food in coach. 50 to 70 slices will about handle the first-class passenger load on a slave-ship (757). ;)

Remember that the ATA is one of the groups leading the charge for user fees and actively tries to discourage GA. They want everybody to fly on the airlines and put up with this kind of service.

Sounds like kidnapping to me

Pure and simple. It's always easy to be a tough guy after the fact, but I just don't believe I'd stay on that airplane for 8 hours. I'm not sure exactly what I'd do to get off, but I do have some ideas. I just don't see it happening.

One more reason not to fly scheduled carriers. Long live GA.

I'm GOING DOWN THE STAIRS! No stairs? I'll hang and drop. Arrest me? Does that mean you'll take me off the plane?

Being larger than most, I can get claustrophobia after a while. If the plane was full you'd have to sedate me or let me OUT.

I have recurring nightmares of being in a small space with a lot of people and no way to get to an exit. Had several this weekend. I was in what we call a "gangway" with crowds of people packed at both ends.

....

That just conjured up a great image - I can just imagine a 757 with long oars sticking out of every window...the passengers rowing their way through the skies to save the airlines money on gas.

Like the galleys and triremes of the past.

Am I a history nerd or what?

Nah, you won't have to hang and drop... just open one of the doors. You always hear the door arm / disarm cross check from the FA's. When the door is armed, and you open it, the slide deploys. Problem solved for you deplaning.. unfortunatly you better hope everyone wants to go with you because at that point the plane will not be going any further without repairs.

ahaha, that was here!
Not likely to see a 57 in Midland Tx...that's why no gate or stairs could handle them I guess....shoulda stopped short at El Paso. But that would have cost a bunch of $$ to turn back to elp.
I was there the day after too.
Its miles - like 10 to the nearest pizza hut.

IMHO this scenario is the only rational reason for that "passenger bill of rights".

I'm with Mike. After 8 hrs in a middle coach seat on a tarmac, no food (or 1/100 pizza), no water, (how about the restrooms) I'd be seriously considering Guantanamo as a reasonable alternative.

Exactly the correct image. 'Cept you pay for the privilege.

There are folks within AA that call 'em that.
