If you're near San Diego, or can get yourself there, I highly recommend you attend the Women in Aviation Conference that is being held on March 13-15th (and no, you don't have to be a woman). Nearly all airlines and many corporate flight operations attend this convention, and they bring recruiters and accept resumes. There are also numerous education sessions that can help you in your career. More information can be found on their website at www.wai.org.

Here's the list of companies who will be there:

They are getting awfully proud of themselves... Have you seen the fees? $$$$ I certainly can't afford to go.

:hairraise::hairraise::hairraise: Another aviation related rip off. In the maritime industry, all this stuff is free.

Too many of these are expensive for both attendees and exhibitors. In the lab equipment industry, it's not uncommon to pay $8000 for a 10'x10' booth and $450 to attend the show. Add in travel, hotels, meals, cost of exhibit signs, and shipping a trade show gets expensive. The exhibit hall also charges for every thing- table, card scanner (needed to read the badges, and they are all slightly different), chairs, trash can, etc. You also must buy labor (provided by the helpful union) if your booth can't be assembled in a few minutes by one person.

To attend the American Chemical Society meeting, it's $400 for members. You don't wnat to know what we pay for a booth (albeit 20'x20'). The exposition (trade show part) is only $35 to get in, but an exhibitor can get you in for free.

All these trade shows (except maybe in the marine industry) are money makers for the various organizations.

I think the difference is that with most trade shows the exhibitors are trying to market their products to other companies. The attendees usually are people representing these companies and are able to afford the $300-400 price of admission. I have never been to one of these WAI events but I know that they are promoted more as job fairs. If I was at the start of my career, that would be a lot of money to pay to attend, not to mention getting there and the hotel expense. On the other hand, if you were able to get a job as a result it would be worth it. :dunno:

$300-$400 is a lot to pay to get into a job fair IMHO unless you walk away with a job.

I thought I wanted to go... But $430 for registration, plus airfare which when I looked a month ago was running $510 on the cheapest ticket I could find (must be spring break over there? I just bought a round trip instead to go visit family, $128), plus airport parking, plus the conference rate of $139/night for hotel, etc, sure adds up quick!

Yeah, trade shows do get expensive real quick for exhibitors. I'm not sure what the grand total wound up being for the one I just finished there, but I can tell you that just my hotel bill was nearly $1000.00. Now, there were 7 of us there, and when you factor in airfare and meals to that, plus some other expenses, you're talking almost $10,000.00 just in travel expenses. That doesn't include the cost of the booth space, the display, shipping the display, or all of the brochures and schwag that we handed out.

On the flip-side, for those who go, the San Diego Convention Center is literally around the corner from the USS Midway, an aircraft carrier that they turned into a museum. Those who are fans of the History Channel show Dogfights will remember it as being the aircraft carrier that all of the planes were based on in the episode with the F-4 Phantoms fighting Migs over North Vietnam. Sadly, I didn't have time to go, but it will be a must-do thing on a return trip.
