Well, I got a shock this morning when I went to the airport to renew the badge which gets me through the gate to my T-hangar. I was given a paper with three lists of IDs. The first list had IDs that would by themselves prove I was not a security risk. A current or expired passport was one of the IDs in the first list. The lists were attached to the application for a new badge and therefore I no longer have the lists to see what the majority of IDs were. The second and third lists were for folks who do not have an ID from the first list. If you don't have an ID from the first list, you must have 1 ID from the second list AND 1 ID from the third list. IIRC the second list had IDs such as a driver's license with a picture on it, and a voter's registration. Again IIRC the third list had IDs such as a Social Security card and a birth certificate if it has the health department's embossing seal on it. All three lists had about a dozen IDs listed. The reason I'm posting this is: I don't want folks to go out to the airport to get their badge renewed and not have the required IDs with them (like I did). I'm guessing this TSA requirement will affect all badged airports. YMMV.

Are you sure it's a TSA requirement? I recall having to present ID when I got my FRZ clearance, but I don't recall lists of items like that. Then again, I had a passport....

BTW, that requirement now exists for a lot of State driver licenses... and soon will be expanded to every State under the Federal RealID act:

See, for example:

Every time you move to another state, you'll be subject to this stuff.

We just had to do this song and dance at CHA, and yes, the airport says TSA is requesting this increased amount of ID documentation.

Even though my badge is good for another year, we had to fill out all new applications (much more thorough than before), and provide ID from lists as you describe. As I have a valid passport, that did it for me.

All of you who fly from airports with commercial service, I'd expect this to be coming your way.

It is like that in NJ now. When I renewed my license, they want 3 forms of ID on a point scale that add up to 6 or more points. Birth certificates and pass ports are 4 points. FAA issued pilots license is worth 2. Your old drivers license is worth ??? (I forget). I showed them all three- the twit at the desk said they didn't take the pilots' license as ID. I showed her the list of acceptable ID from the renewal mailing- showed her FAA and where it said it was a pilot's license. She marked her form as "Insurance ID card":dunno: but she at least let me get the license.

Here in Nebraska- what a difference for the better! But they said the additional ID requirements are coming Real Soon Now...

I used my plastic FAA license when I went, and they accepted it no problem (though she did look at it funny first). She asked what it was, and put it down as "US Government ID". This was at Bakers Basin in Lawrenceville.

I had my marriage license with me in case I needed it, but I wanted to try the pilot's license first.

Anyone want Prickett-Grooms security cards? You could show that. It would be a security badge to another aiport. I mean if you're cleared there, that should be be good to clear you anywhere right? :D

This will all be moot when we get our Real ID cards and the pilots certs with pictures on that required us to drive 50 (or 500) miles to the FSDO.

I wonder if my concealed carry permit counts as one form of ID. Of course, that couldn't work in NJ either.

What happens if you are a transient and need to get to the ramp? Are you escorted now?:dunno:

I was once stopped when walking across the American Eagle ramp at Dubuque. They get about 2 AE flights a day, and this was during a time that a flight was neither departing or arriving. I was walking along the ramp towards the 172 I flew in on, and was told I must leave because I didnt have an ID. I offered a Pilots certificate and CFI certificate but that apparently wasnt good enough.

So how did you get back to the airplane?

well thats what I asked the guy. I was equidistant between the hangar I had been in and the airplane. So I asked "how do you want me to get to the other side" He looked a little confused (this was the point where I shouldve started running) and then asked how i got there. told him i came through the hangar so he told me to go back there, so i walked back to the hangar, through the hangar, back to the FBO on the non airport side, through the FBO and to the airplane.

I thought they were going to have the AME's take pics, and just mail the cards...

Of course, I have my doubts as to whether they're even going to the picture ones, since now everyone is going to have to go and get a non-pic plastic one.

I think this is fallout from the "Real ID" act that ties strict ID procedures to federal funds. It's primarily focused on state issued IDs, and tries to clean up various DMVs and other agencies so that people can have higher confidence in them.

Basically, you need to prove two things - citizenship and identity. Certain documents like passports and birth certificates can do both. Others are only good for one function.

The requirements for getting a passport have been this way for a long time, and the law is raising the standard to near that level for everything.

Somebody must have decided that publicly owned airports (meaning owned by a town/county/state) that issue IDs would have to comply with the Real ID standards.

Batches?? We don' need no stinkin' batches!!!!!!:D
