Well the F-111 never met the role originally intended in TFX, and the F-4s were getting pretty old... USAF had to build the F-15 after USN bailed out of TFX for the F-14. It's all interrelated...
If we ever meet up sometime I'll have to share the story of an F-15 guy and a P&W guy almost having a fistfight at a company Christmas party ...
The -15 driver had to punch out and was severely injured and the former P&W guy didn't know that when he started talking about how great the engine was... LOL...
And they both worked for a tech company and ended up at the same Christmas party with an open bar...
Luckily a few of us saw it coming and had ahold of the -15 guy by the collar. Ha.
