Accident at local airport

That's what I thought, too, initially, but the facts so far don't bear that out.

The one "witness" (who called the sheriff's office) at the field is a pilot who was waiting for a ride home and indicated it occurred on climbout out, possibly a go-around. The scene is not visible from the airport ramp.

the engine and taken one of the cylinders with them for further study. The tanks were approximately half full when examined and the fuel pump and carburetor had been disassembled and no problems found. I looked at the propellor lying on the shop bench and only one blade was noticeably deformed.

Sounds more like he was doing some T&Gs, the engine went rough on climbout and he was trying to get back around when he got too slow and stalled in. Shame realy considering all the clear space he had to land in.

Henning's theory sounds right. Plane was not in correct position for cross controlled Base to final stall. If if was a engine out why did he auger it in. probably did someting at some point to make it stall. Sad day what ever ther reason.
