Hi there, im going to take a first class medical today. From what I have read at best it will be deferred. I have a medical history of opiate addiction. I have been clean since I started an out patient program December 8, 2015 but the only form of documentation is from the doctor stating I was fully compliant and still sober when I left the program, July 14, 2017. I need the first class for the ATP school. I have never had any arrest and or run ins with the law. I checked myself in to the program I am fully willing and financially able to do any HIMS program but as im 29, if I have to wait another full 2 years of documenting my sobriety (which is actually fair and understandable in my opinion) it is rather daunting. Any advice or information on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Sorry you are in this situation but you have some hoops to jump through. There are other threads here of people in similar situations to what you are in now. Search for those. Hopefully one of the docs will be along. It really comes down to you being recovered, able to demonstrate you will not relapse and are able to follow your docs instructions if they think you can be certificated. Being a pilot requires a lot of perseverance. Your situation presents a need for even more perseverance and work if you are up for it.

If your AME isn't a specialist in this stuff, don't get the medical. Someone who doesn't know this stuff could make your life a lot harder than it needs to be.

If your AME *is* a specialist in this stuff, listen to them, not PoA.

Unless you want to waste lots of time and money, get a HIMS AME. That's where you're going to end up anyhow. They can tell you what you need to do.

Really, you’re looking at being monitored for 6 months before sending in an application.

Tons of airline pilots go to 35 days inpatient, then apply for a medical 90 days later.

With your attitude, which appears good, this really isn’t a big deal. There’s hoops, some money for sure, but it’s well beaten path.

As mentioned, get a good HIMS AME. About where in the country are you located?

I'm located in phoenix az. My AME made it sound like this is a well beaten path, it feels like I'm in purgatory but if you're dumb enough to get addicted to drugs you better be willing to jump through hoops and pee in cups.
