Well, according to the Oatmeal. Didn't have time to snopes etc for accuracy so I will leave it to others. Maybe it's all true. I was reading The Oatmeal for its
humorous (but nsfw) description of Autocorrect.
I think Gene was a Texan.

Somewhat true, although according to Wiki, he stayed with Pan Am for almost a year after the crash and then went to work as a cop in LA which is what his education was in and what his father had done.

In short, the crash did happen, but I'm not sure if changed his life the way the story is presented. He was a bomber pilot during the war, so it's not like that was his first brush with death.
