I was setting up a WLAN for someone this weekend and for the third time I could not 128bit WEP to work. Yes, before someone asks, the keys were right as there was partial connections but I was unable to obtain an IP address through DHCP, I could get 64bit to work fine. I have noticed this on several different networks. Is there a trick with the 128bit WEP, like having to use the same manufacturer of AP and SS?

BTW I have noticed on this PCs and MACs so it is not an OS thing.

Some APs require a certain key length for WEP. The 64-bit key will be truncated if your key is long enough but it won't work for 128-bit.

Try a longer key or switch to WPA-PSK with a passphrase.

I had a correct key for 128bit and changed to a shorter one for the 64 bit. I would have liked to use WPA-PSK but the SS did not support that mode of security.
