Should I bother with sport license if I can't buy a plane?

Ahh, thank you. I misread the regs and incorrectly thought it was 2,000 AGL with a max cap of 10,000 MSL. The correct reading makes Sport Pilot WAY more useful!

Should I bother with sport license if I can't buy a plane?

A bit late on this thread, so jumping back... Isn't the 2000' AGL a non-starter for instrument approaches generally speaking? Just remembering some old approaches I used to shoot back in the day I'd need 2500-3000 AGL to do the approach. Maybe that's just my area?

    Pilot Deviation Stinson Field

I'd say the opposite. While it won't give you the nice traffic separation, a non-towered field isn't going to give you a number to call if you do something silly either... :-)

Going for an IA: random questions

My certificate says "Instrument Airplane" on it. IA is appropriate. If it was helicopter you were going for, it'd be IH. IR is apparently for "Instrument Raft"... :-)

    Sigtronics headsets

I have no complaints about my Sigtronics.

Do you use a digital logbook application?

Instructor signoffs, signatures, and stickers are really hard to use with a digital logbook. :-)

    GPS outage or system problem?

Not familiar with their exact antenna, but am familiar with others that would be similar in concept... Probably bad filters on the amplifier components...

    GPS outage or system problem?

I haven't seen a complete loss, but I've seen RAIM failures in areas that were not in the RAIM prediction. I also saw a LPV fall back to LNAV the other day and the guy familiar with the area says it happens everytime he flies that particular approach. Something in the area must be whacking the...

    Using Paper

I love the electronics, but I keep going back to paper. Depending on exactly what you're doing, either one might be easier. Finding random VORs you've never heard of before is unhappiness on either. Finding random intersections is easier on glass. Getting a good area overview paper wins...

    Change in logbook carrying interpretation?

My search-fu must be weak. Did a quick search and came up empty handed. Maybe now that there's 2 threads about it, it'll be easier to find. ;-)

    Change in logbook carrying interpretation?

Yeah, there's a whole series of exceptions. Rec pilots outside of 50nm from home, sport pilot CFIs... If you're in any of those special conditions you may well need to have your logbook per the FARs anyways.

    Change in logbook carrying interpretation?

I don't see any control/document numbers on it, but it's titled "GUIDE TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS REGARDING FEDERAL LAW PERTAINING TO DOCUMENT CHECKS ON GENERAL AVIATION AIRCRAFT" I googled around some and found a copy referenced on aero-news as well...

    Change in logbook carrying interpretation?

Ran across a post on arfcom about a private pilot (not student) getting ramped by federal LEO. the LEO took exception to the fact that he wasn't carrying his pilot's logbook. Another arfcommer was able to locate a DHS document from April 2011 that listed the pilot's logbook as being required...

high wing vs low wing for a private pilot

Bad comparison. 9mm is a good CCW choice, .45 isn't a good choice for anything. If you've got room to carry a big ol' .45, you really should be carrying a 10mm! :-)

high wing vs low wing for a private pilot

Definitely low wing. Much easier to land, better stall characteristics (at least in the common trainer/entry level class, YMMV in higher performance). Wider gear track gives better ground handling characteristics. No ladder/climbing up the side of the airplane during pre-flight. In a water...

    Buy my own plane?

As much as I love airplanes, I can't recommend owning one except for extreme circumstances. They can rapidly suck up large amounts of your time to maintain with things you don't really think about at first (they need to be washed periodically, etc). If you fly a *lot*, it can make economic...

    I TAKE IT PERSONALLY

I was very active on the "Red Board". Not so much here though. Too much of the stuff (and people) that turned me off over there ended up over here. Internet forums are a tough problem. Hard to get everyone to play nice together. I used to be a forum admin at a couple other places and know...

    I TAKE IT PERSONALLY

It seems to be near impossible to have a civilized discussion with other pilots on the Internet. Are pilots too aggressive by nature for it to work?

    AOPA Ticked Me Off

I still get a lot of value from the AOPA magazine, so I'm still a member. Despite all the annoying mailings and the fact that they seem to be in bed with the NBAA (who I hate with a passion). Dropped the EAA awhile back. There's some good people in it, but (at least locally) they're rapidly...

Is a Cessna Mandatory Service Bulletin on the Horizon

I used to believe the same thing, but I'm not so sure anymore. It may vary based on manufacturer and build date of the airplane... The annual inspection list for a 172S that I'm familiar with mentions that applicable service bulletins must be done. So, in this case, what's normally not...
