University of Washington Tour which airport

Looking for some local knowledge in the Seattle area. Flying in for a college tour at the Seattle campus. Looks like KSEA is the closest airport. Also looks like SEA is the only airport with an ILS approach? Is it even possible to fly into SEA? The AFD does not say no!

Just a good day to fly

The pic with the snow was taken at Big Bear L35 Sunday. For you east coasters, thats where the big man hunt is going on for the cop killer thats running around. The second shot was taken this morning around Palm Springs area.

    Grass field and Piper Arrow

We took a great trip in the Turbo Arrow last summer through Idaho, Washington, Oregon and into Canada. It did great on the grass strips. I will say that the only wrecked airplanes we saw at the remote strips were Cherokees. Both crashed when they landed deep.

    When is the right time?

I came back to flying after a 20 year hiatus. Got my instrument proficiency check after about 3 lessons. The procedures are so ingrained you never forget them. Get it now while you are young. If you do quit flying and eventualy come back to it, you will be happy not to have to go through the...

Going for an IA: random questions

I recently heard ATC give instruction to a commercial airliner to execute a hold. His response was less than confident. Almost as if he was shocked to get the instruction. Not sure if the controller picked up on it but the order was shortly recended. I just don't think it happens very often.

    This'll buff right out

Hard to argue with any landing you walk away from is a good one. But... He seemed really hot coming in. I would have looked for his best stall landing.

    Foreflight "Fly Charts"

Kent: I alter my course all the time. As an example: Sunday I left Big Bear as weather was coming in. I had to fly off the back of the mountain because the weather was approaching from the direction of my intended departure. I had Direct plugged into my foreflight. My direction of flight took...

    Foreflight "Fly Charts"

Not to hijack the thread but... with foreflight, if I input a route in the map section it shows the line or route of flight between departure and destination. If I want to change anything durring the flight, I'm struggling to get rid of the original magenta lines. I want to clear out the...

    Portable GPS

I have an ipad mini (fore flight)and a garmin Aera. Like both for different reasons. For changing enroute or grabbing a quick direct too, the Garmin is hands down faster and easier to operate than the ipad. I'm still frustrated with the Foreflight direct to function as it requires tidious...

Pearls of wisdom buying a windsock

I have scoured the internet and found various windsocks from Sportys, Spruce and the like. Anyone have personal experienc setting up a windsock. I have some property near the airport that I want to erect a permanent windsock. Was trying to find solar frame for lighting but the ones I found...

    Determining X/C Altitude

This is an interesting topic. I fly a 220 mile leg each weekend. I recently cut my altitude from 8500 to 6500. It has improved my commute time and fuel burn. I may make adjustments for head winds from time to time but I found the extra time to get to altitude for this route is not worth it.

C172 versus Volvo SUV @ Northwest Regional

Re: hi wing meets SUV I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed that. On his trajectory he would not have made the runway.
