Need advice -Wifes first time up

I think this is important. Sometimes it's hard not to give too much information. Example: She should know that she'll probably hear a little chirping noise right before you touch down and that it is normal. She doesn't need to know that it is a stall warning. Tell her on short final so she won't...

    Another radio calls thread

So the jet makes his first call on a straight-in and let's suppose I am in his general vicinity and I don't see him. I'm going to be on the mic quickly making sure we know exactly where each other is and what they are going to do. I don't want the student pilot who just took off announcing that...

I got the "small airplanes are so dangerous talk today"...

Good thoughts. Any given trip should be assessed on its own merit. But is the comparison between the two modes all you are really interested in? If there is a 50% chance that you will have a fatal accident in the car, and a 60% chance that you will have a fatal accident in the plane, I suspect...

I got the "small airplanes are so dangerous talk today"...

Just a thought here - and perhaps not very well thought out. But it seems to me that we are falling victim to a faulty premise, i.e. the idea that because people die in the activity, it is dangerous. What is the threshold at which something becomes dangerous? I'm told that people die slipping...

Checked out in a Cardinal - Fun!

Don't worry about this. If you don't immediately recognize that you grabbed the wrong knob, you'll figure it out within a couple seconds. :D

    Tell me about Decathalon's

Never flown a 150hp Decathlon, but I have a 180hp Super Decathlon. I predict you will have a blast. Though it doesn't have flaps, if you pull the power to idle on final and slip it hard it it comes down like an elevator. I like 75 mph for speed on final when I'm doing three point landings, 80mph...

One thing that should have been taught to you in basic training, but was not.

I appreciate your response. That is apparent from your posts. That's why I was willing to jump in this time. Couldn't agree more. And my good (but slow arriving) judgment tells me that this horse has been beaten to death yet again. But maybe we at least understand each other just a little...

Quoted you n purpose because I didn't learn how to stay out of the discussion. My apologies for any confusion.

One thing that should have been taught to you in basic training, but was not.

Kritchlow: Up until now, I have managed to stay out of these discussions, but I think I might have something at least marginally constructive to add to the thought process. So, please stay with me through this overly-long post. I get where you're coming from - you're new on the scene (whether...

    Real-World Application of PPL/CPL Maneuvers

labbadabba: I'm not an instructor - my perspective is that of a 30+ year private pilot. It's been a long time since I've been a newly-minted pilot, but I've recently watched my wife and son get their certificates. As I watched them progress, I had the opportunity to see how the maneuvers they...

Dumb Country Pilot with ATC Question

Andrew: I'm based at KRVS. Take your cue from ATIS. It will explicitly say whether to contact CD or ground - e.g. "all departures contact ground for clearance . . . " Most of the time, they just have you contact ground. I've been flying VFR and IFR out of RVS for about 20 years and can only...

    Tulsa Harvey Young Airport

Agree with the suggestion of KTUL. Harvey Young also has a north/south grass strip that is just east of the asphalt. Airnav says it is 2500 ft. My son and his instructor have used the grass there and had no complaints. If you go walk the asphalt, you might check out the grass, too.

jumping the gun a bit thinking about getting a bigger plane

I have no experience in an Arrow, but I owned a '68 V35 for about 17 years. During that span, we went from no children to two teenagers. Baggage space was never a problem. During the later years we drove a Lexus RX350 to the airport. The limiting factor as to volume of luggage was what we...

    Tulsa, OK info needed...

I suggest RVS simply because of the work going on at TUL. Traffic at either place that time of night will be light. For FBO's Christiansen Jet Center is open until 10:00. I think Riverside Jet Center closes at 9:00. Both are good. Christiansen has a bigger building with a few more amenities...

Looking for an introduction to the RV-4

I have been looking for a Super Decathlon, but have decided to look into purchasing an RV-4. Before going very far down this path, I would like to see one in person. If you are in, or will be in, the Tulsa area and would like to show your RV-4 off to me, please let me know - I would love to...

    WTB: Super Decathlon

I'm looking for a 180hp Super Decathlon. I would consider one built in the 1970's or 1990's. (In other words, I do not have a preference for either wood or metal spars.) If you know of a good one for sale at a fair price, please send me a PM. Thanks.
