Considering flying Detroit to Ft. Lauderdale

KFXE is a good choice. Visit the Banyan Pilot Shop, eat at the Jet Café. Visit me in Hangar 46B.

    Talk me out of this.

Entiendo. But I am already getting the bug for another aircraft. I'm deciding between certified (mooney or corvalis) or an RV-10. Unfortunately my work demands won't allow even a quickbuild so if I want and RV-10 I'll need help. I'll be watching the OP to see what he does.

    My student got lost...

True. If some glitch hit the WW GPS system, it would be interesting to see what happened. There would be some chaos. I don't think anyone would die however.

    ATC level downgrade

I will never criticize ATC. I am relatively new pilot at ~340 hours mostly x-country. Those guys have been great. Probably the only real safety-related mistake in my career was picking up lite icing near Oxford and being vectored in by an ATC guy who clearly was interested in my well-being...

The over-reliance on GPS thing is over-hyped. While I occasional fly VOR for change of pace, I don't mind flying the magenta line at all. Flying is about risk management and the risks here are less than negligible. I have 5 GPSs on board. If they all fail, we have a system-wide failure (as in...

    Talk me out of this.

If you do it can be life changing wonderful. RV is a great choice too with the support and quality you'll be buying into. One of the favorite parts of my life is perfecting my plane even now after it's completely built. The advice every successful homebuilder will give you though is that you...

Time to buy ADS-B - which one?

I got the GDL-39 coupled to a aera 796 and am very happy with the combination. I do agree it's expensive. I also have GTX-33ES which lights up traffic making the entire system very useful (and 2020 compliant). The Nexrad seems to be a little more accurate than XM and a little less latent but I...

I might be reacting a bit harshly but I think we got off on the wrong foot with the cloud incident. I've logged almost 300 x-country hours since then so have a different perspective than a nervous 70 hour PPL candidate.

You're right, it's not quite under the shelf but just north of it. Now that I am based at FXE, I have intimate familiarity with the area :) You ATC approach and equipment failure approach would have been a good one. I still don't love the idea of telling ATC I have a failure when it's really...

    My student got lost...

I have a real problem with these artificially induced scenarios. It happened on my PPL check-ride (which I passed). It started to go downhill when he told me to fly up to the clouds the check how high they were. As it broke VFR minimums I refused and he grabbled the controls from me and flew up...

scud flying VFR @ 500 ft AGL question

I think this gets quoted to scare folks into avoiding IMC (well intentioned perhaps). I am not IRed but with a safety pilot I've flown complex instructions quite well with reference to instruments. This doesn't mean I'm complacent and I've never flown into IMC. Maybe there are some pilots that...

eBay Auction: He never took the GPS outdoors?

This doesn't seem to me to be that strange. When I recieved my 696 I immediately tested it inside with the antenna by the window. I played with it for several hours inside over the next few days. Two weeks later I took it over to the aircraft. In his case for whatever reason he just never flew...

    Cirrus safety vs Mooney safety

You bring up some interesting points. As an engineer, I submit that it is impossible to accurately compare the safety record of different aircraft types. There are way too many control variables to account for. You would have to account for inherently difficult to measure controls like: Type of...
