    soaring intro near santa barbara?

Hi. Regarding Santa Ynez airport (KIZA), the glider operation is called Santa Barbara Soaring and the instructor is Cindy Brickner: http://www.caracole-soaring.com/ She's been flying gliders for nearly 40 years, used to run an operation out of Cal City, and is a good instructor. If you...

    Any Glider Pilots?

I took the commercial glider checkride a couple of weeks ago and will be flying rides starting tomorrow for the local operation here. The 2-32 is a fun sailplane to fly.

    Flying near Santa Barbara

After seeing the "June Gloom" marine layer out there this weekend, I agree. I started doing some homework on the operations at SBA and found this today: Owner Sentenced in Insurance-Fraud Scheme Well, whatever I do, I will make sure that I have a suitable Renter's Insurance policy!

    Flying near Santa Barbara

Thanks. I was warned about June Gloom during the interview. Yeah, I'd probably need to downsize to a 1 BR apartment out there to pull it off, but so it goes.

Thanks! That's comforting to know, because that's about the drive time to the GA airports I fly out of around here. Cheers, Paul

    Flying near Santa Barbara

There's a possibility that I may be taking a job near Santa Barbara and moving to the area. I've lived in the Washington D.C. suburbs my entire life and don't know a whole lot about SoCal. There is a GA airport in Santa Inez (IZA) with a glider operation and another in Lompoc (LPC). I saw a...

    Contest Video

I think she was standing next to the windsock by the judge's line. It looked like she had a pretty good camcorder, and I do remember that it had a big lens shade.

    Quiet Technologies Headset...

I've had my QT Halo for 3 years and love it. I use the silicone earbuds rather than the foam ones: they are easier for me to use, last longer, and seem to work just as well.

    Mountain flying course

I had never seen the Rockies before taking the course a couple years ago, and it was a great learning experience: http://www.pilotsofamerica.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42803 I want to do it again someday. Cheers, Paul

DVDs or books for an aspiring aerobatic pilot?

Cassidy's is a great book--my copy is falling apart. And it is not hard to find: available from EAA or Amazon.

    Questions about Aerobatics

Here is a good list of aerobatic flight instructors/schools: http://iacusn.org/schools/. As others have mentioned, acro is highly addictive. The IAC competitions are great fun, too. Good luck!

Video from my Second Aerobatics Lesson

Interesting that you are doing snaps on lesson 2. Usually, you don't run into those in competition until the Intermediate level. Have fun with it!

    How safe/unsafe is glider flying?

I take it you have never been in good mountain wave conditions in a suitable glider. To each his own, but my experience was not what I would call boring. It was the closest I've ever come to being out of control in an aircraft. The rotor turbulence on tow alternately dealt +4g and -3.5g...

    Plastic Bag in Prop

Don't know. If I owned an airplane, it would not be high on my list to throw a raw chicken at its spinning prop :)
