Beautiful day for low and slow

And kites. Some of those in the Atlantic City area get pretty high.

    Question about Flight Following....

They're better than they used to be. There used to be a female controller there who figured that anything more than a few aircraft were too much for her to handle. This was back when I still owned the Cherokee, and I was flying up to MPO to meet another pilot who was flying our R22 up there...

    Question about Flight Following....

I agree that you should follow the instruction. I will add, however, that Allentown Approach can be a major pain in the butt at times -- there are a couple of controllers there who seem to like to bust your chops any opportunity.

Beautiful day for low and slow

Welcome to my world! Two things for those who want to venture into the 500-1000 agl world. One, don't assume slow closure rates -- most of us cruise from 100-130 KIAS at these altitudes! The other thing when you're playing at helicopter altitudes -- tune a radio to 123.025 -- the...

    HDD replacement time

I, too, like Acronis -- it takes the least amount of work to do a restore.

    Finding the right AME

I prefer AME's who are pilot themselves. No particular reason, except that the pilot/AME's I've used seem to have a real grasp of what flying is about.

    New Student / headset

Two words: Ship's Power :D No batteries, my friend! We ordered our R44 with Bose wiring and headsets at all four stations. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. There's actually two jacks at each station -- one Bose, and one conventional single plug helicopter jack. I've yet to have anybody...

Champion Air - Another one bites the dust

I just realized I stated my point backward. If you can make enough to cover your variable costs and contribute something towards the fixed cost then you're better off producing whatever it is that you do.

    Gettin' old sucks...

The R22 lives in South Africa now, Adam -- we sold it last December! I have the R44 reserved, and I'll fly that in pretty high winds and pretty low ceilings (the R22 didn't do so well in high winds -- not very much tail rotor authority).

Champion Air - Another one bites the dust

Not necessarily true in the short run, Scott. What economic theory says about that it that if you can meet your fixed costs (rent, finance charges, etc. -- charges which don't vary with the number of flights) then you're better off staying in business even if you don't meet all of your variable...

    Gettin' old sucks...

Last year? Not hardly (in the words of John Wayne)... Let's just say, Bob, that they just sent me a medicare card which is effective Jul 1. This too, I shall survive, though!

    Gettin' old sucks...

The good news is that I got off of jury duty... The bad news is that I was diagnosed with a form of walking pneumonia a few weeks ago. Had a course of antibiotics, and will have a CAT scan tomorrow to see how things are progressing. The bad news also is that I had to cancel my mountain...

    New Student / headset

Ya pays your money and ya takes your choice :D When you fly for an hour or two it may not make a difference. But when you're flying 6-8 hours or more in the day, I'll take Bose over Lightspeed any day (and I've owned them, including a 30-3G).

    John Lancaster aka Flingwing206

There was a book published a few months ago (I just found out about it) called The God Machine by James Cliles. I'm told that among other things (like the history of helicopters!) he talks about doing flight instruction with John. The book has gotten positive reviews on verticalreference.com...

    Max takeoff x-wind

Maybe this will help. If something is in the "Limitations" section of the POH or AFM, then it is a limitation and is mandatory. Demonstrated x-wind component is not in this section and therefore is not a limitation. All it means is that a test pilot flew an a/c in that kind of x-wind during...

    Max takeoff x-wind

X-wind? Why would I want to do that? It's much less traumatic to point the helicopter into the wind and take off into it. :D Same same on landing... :heli:
