    Garmin G5 SB 22013a

If you own a early generation Garmin G5, you may have experienced excessive backup battery discharge during period of flying inactivity. I was experiencing a loss of about 15-20% of the backup battery capacity per week between flights. On some occasions (like during long inclement winter weather...

    G5 battery drain SB 22013

So Garmin has finally officially owned up to the problem of G5s irreversibly draining the backup batteries during periods of inactivity with this service bulletin. I raised this issue with Garmin 2 years ago and was given the brush-off. Looks like three versions of backup batteries and software...

    Pilot Error Reaps Reaper

According to the Syracuse Post-Standard and other sources a MQ-9 Reaper based out of SYR crashed on takeoff after the pilot mistakenly cut off fuel flow instead of raising the flaps. The error was apparently compounded by erroneously lowering the flaps while attempting to correct the situation...

    G5 software update

The Experimental/LSA model is updated to v6.75 as of October 19. Includes an update to the GAD-29B (3.30) and GMU-11 (2.10). The certificated version is still on v6.72 as of July 10, but perhaps an upgrade to v6.75 and beyond is upcoming. The G5 still has a slow power draw issue on the backup...

Landing incident in Cortland NY (N03)

Looks like someone crumped a Piper Colt (?) in Cortland NY on Monday, July 13. The news reports are a little confusing. (They often are.) The pilot and passenger reported to first responders that they departed the airport and returned due to "winds" and decided to land in the grass on the...

    G5 software updates

I see version 6.40 of the G5 software was released on December 18, superceding version 6.20, which I have. So, a question: What are G5 owners doing about software updates? Obviously, it's easy enough for an owner to accomplish without assistance, and I suppose it requires a logbook entry, but...

    RLOC incident, Cortland NY (N03)

Looks like more fodder for the anti- touch & go crowd. Aircraft practicing landings wound up in a snowbank. I overflew the airport about an hour before the reported incident. https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/231680

Easiest way to bypass HILPT on GNS-430?

Flying a familiarization flight with my G5s and GNS-430 (and the new GPS 35 approach at KVGC with a HILPT instead of the old T-entries) I discovered that the GNS-430 will command the G5s to fly the HILPT whether or not it is required. (When approaching the IAF from the south, the HILPT is not...

    Cringe-worthy sight

It was a nice day here in Central NY, one of several warm, sunny days in a row. So it's a good time to go flying and get the old engine heated up and exercised. While I'm pulling my plane out of the hangar and pre-flighting, I see a tied-down C172, surrounded by snowbanks (I shoveled my hangar...

G5 will not track VOR signal from GNS-430W

Here is an odd one. Trying to complete a dual G5 install. The G5s will track a GPS or ILS localizer signal, but not a VOR signal from a GNS430 (through GAD29B). The GNS430, G5s and STEC-20 now have the latest firmware, but no joy. Weird. Any ideas? It must be something relatively simple.

Here we go again with GPS interference testing...

This time 9 full days of GPS interference testing at Fort Drum which will wipe out all of the approaches at our airport and many others in Central New York. With MON coming and the scheduled decommissioning of most of this area's VORs imminent, even enroute IFR nav becomes more difficult. Of...

ICAO Flight Plan transition...really this time

So, FAA notice NOTC9616 says we are really, really, really this time going to transition to ICAO (international) flight plans on August 27, 2019. Simplified instructions for filing are found here. The real head-scratcher is trying to figure out the correct ICAO equipment codes for your...

A reminder for why you want WAAS GPS if you fly IFR

There have been a few threads recently about training in or owning VOR-only equipped aircraft for IFR flight. I just completed a trip to Pittsburgh and back, where the utility of flib-flying IFR and WAAS GPS was reinforced. If you were flying this trip IFR with VOR only, you would be pretty much...

    NGT-9000 weirdness

OK, this has me stumped. I've contacted my installer and dealer to figure out what's up. Briefly, the FIS-B display on the NGT-9000 has become intermittent for some products. (Worked flawlessly prior to this spring.) That is AIRMET, SIGMET, and Turbulence boundaries appear and disappear every...

    Another GPS interference test

https://www.faasafety.gov/files/notices/2018/Nov/FDNY_18-77_GPS_Flight_Advisory.pdf Great. Another GPS interference test, 5 days long, one day notice. Looks like several going on at once around the country. This one will wipe out all usable approaches to our airport and affect GPS nav over a...
