Heavy and aft loaded, but within envelope

And remember that when you flare with the CG so far back, the stabilator controls will feel a bit lighter, and the nose will be a lot more willing to point up. Just be cognizant of that, and don't let it surprise or startle you.

    Gastons 2013 Attendance

Well, I've not been on here much lately, and have only been to Gaston's once for about 30 minutes on a Saturday back in 09 or 10. But I'm going to try to drop in for a few on Friday (fingers crossed), just to see a few faces I've not seen either ever or in a long time.

Why do we startup and shutdown piston airplane engines the way we do?

And don't forget the old British twins, with Amal concentric carburetors, as well as my Puch-manufactured Sears Allstate motor scooter, which used "ticklers" to enrich the fuel/air mixture for first start.

    TFRs - warnings, repercussions.

What has happened, John, is they have continued to live in an era wherein we were free to move about the country, as the SWA ad cliche goes. They haven't yet realized that that is no longer the case. Sigh.

Devils playground video, south county terlingua

Okay. After having watched this, I can now say I hate you and am jealous. Absolutely beautiful, in a stark way. Wish I could go back to my home town area (Tularosa, NM) and video all that. Beauty is all over this great country, and your canyons are unique.

    Hyperventilated in the 3rd grade

:nono: Thus the arthritis in the knuckles today! Obviously a medical issue!

    Not in the FAR/AIM

Back in the last century I served on a nuclear-powered surface ship. One day, standing feed control watch in the engine room, the same conditions occurred--perfect coincidence of amplitude and period of the rocking and rolling. In the engine room nothing moves--while everything is moving...

    Who is Next to You

Back in Winter 04, from SGF to DEN to SLC. The SGF-DEN leg was uneventful once we got off the ground (massive snowstorm at SGF, serious headwinds en-route to DEN. Had to run between the gates... Get to the gate where the 737 is waiting on me, hearing my name being paged. Close call! Glad I...

    Was Einstein Wrong?

Just looking at the numbers, the difference between predicted and measured was only 25 ppm; I suspect that is really close to the measurement uncertainty. I suspect that some (dunno if all) of that difference can be accounted for by the experiment's measurement uncertainty. Meanwhile...

    Who's got the biggest...

In my illustrious career of 297+ hours, I've never flown into 3DW. Someday I will, just to say I have. BTW, there is a really good video history of that airfield that can be found on Ozarks Public TV.

It's a sad day today for manned spaceflight

And I fear that after the first major mishap (or worse, mishap involving the ISS), gov't oversight/regulation will become so oppressive, no private enterprise will be able to operate within the rules and still turn a profit. I just don't think the STS-1 flag will be retrieved from the ISS by...

    Oil filter picture instructions

'85 Pontiac Bonneville, 5.0L Chevy small-block, Rochester E4ME carburetor, Turbohydramatic 200 transmission (made out of coffee cans). I ordered this car, so it had less than some1.5 miles on the clock (if that much). At 1500 miles, first oil change: Comes time to remove the oil filter, and...

    Sobering FAAST Seminar

A lot of Cardinals have the dual Bendix mags. See the CFO Website for more details. Seems many have swapped out their -D engines for non -D engines, for that very reason. A few Cardinals have made off-field landings because of the mags.

    Flew for lunch...watched an accident.

I remember what Old Man Gaston said after one plane bent its nosewheel and prop after attempting land on said nosewheel several times: "plane was too fast, pilot was too slow." I've taken that to heart. :dunno:

Using Flight Following to Practice Manuvers

When I'm just piddling around with maneuvers, I just say, "SGF approach, puddlejumper 12346 out of Bugtussle at x,xxx feet to the ____ practice area; request radar advisories." They are always kind enough to do so. Radar advisories, since I'm not going anywhere in particular; flight following...

    Gastons Departure Thread

Not certain, but I'm going to try and drop in for a short while Saturday. Depends on how my hip is acting. Very sore if I stand on it; fine after awhile sitting. Who knows?

ATC vectors SWA Flight to intercept NORDO Cirrus

Absolutely not! He was completely and totally under control of the controller; had he not been under control of the controller, he would have been completely and totally out of control, like the two spam cans which "crash landed" at DCA the other night when no controller was controlling them...
